Every so often you get an electric guitar and a player whose fortunes are inextricably linked. Take the Gibson Les Paul and Slash. Since emerging from the sleaze of the '80s LA scene and taking an animalistic rock sound worldwide, the Guns N' Roses guitarist is synonymous with the classic singlecut.

There have been a number of limited edition Slash Les Pauls — Custom Shop models, premium Epiphone models — but there has never been a production line model until now.

The latter two finishes are a little off-piste as far as Gibson burst colours go but they look spectacular, but then they are listed as limited editions so if they do tickle your fancy don't hang around. Ostensibly the guitars are the same. Oh, and there is signed truss rod cover, too. A blank truss rod cover is included with the case if you feel the Gibson headstock has only got room for one guitar hero's name.

There is abundant evidence that this was put together with a lot of love, care and attention to detail. Our review instrument was the November Burst. As with the others in the series there is no weight relief. Those with sciatica look away now — ours was pushing 4. But weight is a subjective quality. Some relish it, and comfort is typically only a good choice of strap away.

Get a strap that's thick and wide to spread the load. If the weight is the first thing you notice, the second will be the finish. The quality control has not always been up to snuff at Gibson but the new regime has made it a priority and there is abundant evidence to suggest that this was put together with a lot of love, care and attention to detail.

As you might expect Slash likes his pickups voiced a little hotter than regular Burstbuckers. Under the hood you'll find k pots and orange drop capacitors on a metal shielding plate. Slash's signature is emblazoned on the truss rod cover but there is a blank in the case. The Gibson Les Paul is considered to be one of the two most important electric guitar models of all time. First released in the early s, the Les Paul has now been produced in thousands of variants over the years, with the core design spinning off into a vast constellation of Les Paul sub-models and families.

Gibson also has a tendency to switch up the specs of specific models year-to-year, resulting in a mind-bogglingly diverse pool of instruments to sift through if you're trying to buy a Les Paul. Here on Reverb, at any given time, there are thousands of different Les Pauls on the site spanning the known universe of old and new models. While it would be impossible to describe the ins and outs of every model and era in just one page, with this guide, we will outline the major model families, providing a good starting point on your quest for the one that's right for you.

As you scroll, you can click on the individual model callouts for a quick glance at what we have in stock, including different finish options and pricing history for every model.

Below, we're keeping the focus strictly on Gibson guitars. Our used inventory encompasses decades' worth of special editions, model updates, finish options, and other variations. Don't limit your search for a Gibson to only this year's models. One way in which different Les Paul models vary is in the shape of the neck and how it fits in your hand.

Typically, Gibson necks fall into two broad categories: Those labeled as having a '50s-style neck tend to be a bit chunkier, rounder, and more C-shaped.

Those with a '60s-style neck will be a bit thinner in what's sometimes called a D-shape profile. There's variation beyond that as well, and when looking at a specific listing on Reverb, it's the sort of thing you can always message the seller to ask about before making an offer. Most Les Pauls have a piece of carved maple on the top of their mahogany body, and Les Paul aficionados tend to value those with a high degree of flaming or figuring in the wood.

Usually, these guitars carry high-quality, glossy finishes that really showcase the stripes. Lower-end options like the Les Paul Studio tend to use darker finishes, which do not reveal any flame on their tops.

Other options, like the Les Paul Tribute line, use more economic "satin" finishes, which obscure the wood altogether. Its typical design features a solid mahogany body with a carved maple top and a single cutawaya mahogany set-in neck with a rosewood fretboard, two pickups with independent volume and tone controls, and a stoptail bridgealthough variants exist.

The Les Paul was originally offered with a gold finish and two P pickups. Les Paul was a respected innovator who had been experimenting with guitar design for years. He had hand-built a solid-body prototype nicknamed "The Log", often suggested as the first solid-body Spanish guitar ever built. In orPaul had approached Gibson with "The Log" prototypebut his design was rejected.

Early prototypes are very similar to the final version.

McCarty approached Les Paul for the right to imprint the musician's name on the headstock with the intention of increasing sales; inGibson presented Paul a nearly finished instrument for approval. McCarty stated that design discussions with Les Paul were limited to the tailpiece and the fitting of a maple cap over the mahogany body for increased density and sustain, which Les Paul had requested reversed.

However, this reversal would have caused the guitar to become too heavy, and Paul's request was refused. The Custom did not appear on the market for another two years following the introduction of the Goldtop; it is possible that Gibson had planned a full model range of guitars with a roll-out over the course of several years at the time when initial specifications were being set. Les Paul's contributions to the guitar line bearing his name were more than cosmetic; for example, Paul specified that the guitar be offered in a gold finish, not only for flashiness, but to emphasize the high quality of the Gibson Les Paul instrument.

The guitar made its public debut when Paul used it onstage in June at the Paramount theatre in New York. A second Les Paul model was introduced in Called the Les Paul Custom, this black guitar with gold-plated hardware was dubbed the "Black Beauty".

Various bridge and tailpiece designs were added in andincluding the popular Tune-o-matic bridge. The Goldtop and Custom models continued without significant changes until InP pickups were no longer offered on Les Pauls.

The Gear Page. Oct 22, 1. Messages: 2, As someone who loves LP's but lacks plenty of it's history I ask this question. As I understand it, the original standard "bursts" with possibly a few exceptions were made with a cherry burst or cherry plain finish. In other words, is it accurate to say that bursts are like blackguard Telecasters in that butterscotch blondes never really existed anymore than a gorgeous lemondrop or any of the other amazing "hues" that we see today in the reproductions.

But it seems with the blackguard that many came out pretty similar where as with bursts, they "deteriorated" all over the map in terms of finish shades, and I wonder why that is and what caused it. Just interested in some info about the original finishes and if Gibson made any changes during those years, etc.

DBBlues likes this. Oct 22, 2. Messages: Good question. I gotta think that the reason the bursts were different than blackguards or white guards came down to the person applying the burst finish, maybe laying a little heavy or a little light on the outer ring. I copied this pic from the Gary Richrath thread, check out how varied all those bursts were, and I gotta think this pic was from the mid 70s DBBlues and telelion like this.

Oct 23, 3. Seems there were 3 basic finishes. The typical sunburst finish ran from into perhaps early This finish, though very attractive had a dye in it that was not tolerant of UV exposure. Some guitars were literally starting to fade while hanging in the racks in stores. For example some bursts have an interesting shadow near the toggle switch, caused by a paper tag that came hanging on the toggle switch causing one area to be shaded from UV.

Sometime in Gibson changed the dye to something that was indeed UV tolerant, and typically these guitars have faded very little over time.We use cookies to understand how you use our site, give you an awesome experience, and deliver our services. InGibson parted ways with the gold finish on the Les Paul Model and introduced the "Les Paul Standard," a refresh that featured a center-seam maple top, red aniline dye back and sides, and a beautiful transparent Cherry Sunburst finish.

While only that one color was available originally, exposure to sunlight and subtle variations have made each original example unique in color. Gibson Custom picked four beautiful sunburst variations for the new Historic Collection, each bringing out all the character of the unique maple tops.
